My art quilts are very colourful, quite experimental, expressive, detailed and carefully finished. They usually contain several pictorial elements but the overall appearance is of emotion, movement and drama. I always start with a definite concept and a clear picture of the main pictorial components. The rest of the detail and quilt evolve as I work with combinations of fabric, dye paint, dye, cold wax resist, yarns, threads and stitches.
My quilts depict human interaction with the natural world. My own emotional reaction is also usually present. My infinitely interesting subject matter is always close at hand in my own immediate Australian world. For example my felted art quilt “Wet Highway Glimpse” is a pictorial representation of a flat sparsely treed landscape receding into the distance but it really is about the movement of rain pelting down and the speed as I pass by looking through the car window.
